Merry Christmas.

I wish I could be more thrilled about it, but there it is. I'm currently feeling extremely annoyed because of the hypocrisy in my house.

Because of my mother's big shows of displeasure this morning I agreed to sacrifice going to a friend's house for Christmas (we'd celebrated Christmas yesterday anyway, so today would have just been a day of rest and we didn't have anything planned at all, and my mum had initially agreed to let me go until she found out that I was going to the place of someone she felt I didn't know well enough. Let ME be the judge of that!). She went on and on, in the way she suddenly does when she finds out I'm not going out with a friend she knows. It's like these facts don't exist when I'm going out with people she knows, but suddenly become realities when I'm out with new people. "You have so much you need to do you know, like packing and cleaning your room, why do you want to waste your time going out with all these people? It's not like their friendships should be so important to you..." and then the failsafe plea, "Spend time with your family at home during Christmas!" , a statement that never came up at ALL before she found out where I was going.

Well guess what. I gave up my outing, and I'm home right now, and absolutely JACKSHIT is happening. My dad went out for lunch on his own with some colleagues or visitors or something, and my mum has been sleeping for the past 2 hours. My brother is happy playing on the computer by himself.

So tell me. Where is this "family time" my mum insists that I be home for? It doesn't even matter, at 4.43 in the afternoon today, whether I'm at home or not, because WHERE IS THE BLOODY FAMILY TIME?! One parent not home, the other sleeping, sibling who can't care who's there...do I really need to be here? What am I experiencing now that I would be missing out if I wasn't at home? If I were out I could be havingfun. Maybe even finding time to catch the Orchard road parade, or something, instead of being cooped up at home with nobody awake or around. Some Christmas this is.

And my mum never told my dad "Stay home and spend some time with the family!" before he left for lunch.

I guess I'm so angry because this isn't the first time this has ever happened. No siree. Almost every single Sunday afternoon my parents spend sleeping, and still prohibit me from going out with friends because "you should spend some time with your family." And net result? At home and bored, restless. And for some reason, maybe because I was expecting more of today, what with it being Christmas at all, to end up spending the day like this is a crushing disappointment. And I mean verge-of-angry-tears kind of disappointment. And I guess it might not be so much for the loss of the outing itself, but the principle behind it, the hypocrisy, the inconsistency, the continual recurrence of this kind of event.

And here's the real shitty part. Before my hand was forced and my emotions blackmailed into agreeing not to go, I had promised that if I went I'd be home by 4 -- in time for tea and present-opening.

Well look at what time it is, and guess who still hasn't come home, guess who's still sleeping, and so guess what's NOT happening, and guess what I could have done had I known that at 4.48 pm on Christmas Day 2005, there'd be no "family" going on anyway and I could be somewhere else having fun.

My mother may be a reserved introvert with an intense desire to always have the family home, but that's no reason to force her own personality upon me.

Life's full of grievances that way, isn't it.

*sigh* Here's hoping you all are having a better day today than I am. Merry Christmas.

Shots are good for you, kids

Ugh but not when you have one per arm and they're starting to ache like the dickens. On my left shoulder, Meningitis; right, Dipthera and Tetanus. Oh and a needle mark on the inner crook of my elbow where 2 syringes of blood were drawn for testing. At least the nurse who did the deeds at the medical centre yesterday was a nice lady. All nurses should be so round and jolly and cozy. X)

A lovely afternoon and evening spent with my baby yesterday, except it seems the degree to which he shows his affections is directly correlated to the (apparent) length of my hair; the shorter it is, the less he does. Mrw. =<

I think I gotta stop sleeping in so late too. Had I gotten up a wee bit earlier, or bothered to go and yell out the door to ask my mum where she was headed at this time in the morning when I did, I probably could have quickly washed up and crap, gone with her to town and bummed off a free breakfast. Gah. Instead I'm still at home sitting around in my PJs, feeling absolute inertia. Nothing much in this house to eat for brekky and...bleah.

Except maybe chocolate chip cookies. Mm. But that's not much of a breakfast thing, is it? *vegetates*

Filming as extra for Serum City today, my senior Joce's final year film. Secret agent goodness is yay, but I hope I didn't mess up continuity by going for red highlights and a trim in between shooting days. I didn't realize it till I was actually sitting in the hairdresser's chair and she was slathering the paste all over my hair. Past point of no return, oh well. Gotta make the best of it somehow.

ARGH I would have liked a nice breakfast outside. :( *sigh*

Bweee

I know results are inherently touchy subject. But if I can't be happy and put it on my blog, where else can I do so? X)

Parentheses are my own.

Name WONG HUI-WEN VIVIENNE Matric 046017D10
Course CS Year 2

Exam Yr Semester Subject Code Exam Grade

2005 1 CDP201 (20th Century Theatre and Practice) A-

2005 1 CS201 (History of Communication Study) A+

2005 1 CS202 (Visual Communication ) A-

2005 1 CS221 (Broadcast Journalism) A-

2005 1 CS222 (International and Intercultural Communication) B

2005 1 CS226 (Desktop Publishing) B+

I can't possibly be dissatisfied with it. So I'm not. X)

Ok though I have to admit that desktop publishing grade bugs me. I bumped into my lecturer Tay Kay Chin a couple of weeks back, and he told me that he had given me an A on the first pass but didn't know how moderation had affected my grade -- "Either an A- or a B+". So well, the other shoe falls. BAH! :( But surprise of the semester undoubtedly goes to CS202. I was so sure I was a goner-- hadn't done very well for the projects and was pretty sure I'd done the exam essay pretty badly.

But well...at the end of the day, I can proudly say I worked hard, and I gave my best, and by the grace of God I have weathered one more semester. I can now proceed to Ithaca with relief and a great load off my chest. :D ONWARD!

And eh. Packing. Ugh. :( :(

Christmas is coming! Town is so pretty at this time of year, in the evening. It's noisy and crowded and what have you but man...that atmosphere...it really is Christmastime in the city. The lightups, the free shuttle services, shopping centres open till late at night, people thronging the streets, the sounds of street performances, bazaars, hell, even the illegal hawkers and vendors out in full force...Call the buzz all manufactured, but I don't care. They did a damn good job of it, and last night, walking down Orchard road, watching carollers and stallholders and soaking in the atmosphere...it was wonderful.

I'm glad the Council of Churches in Singapore made the move to "reclaim Christmas." Even in the midst of the bright lights and joyful noise, there were always constant reminders interspersed, in verbal or artistic form, that even though this season may be festive and fun, it must not be forgotten Who it is we celebrate on the 25th of December. And that's the most wonderful part of all. :D

Get off our back, Australia.

At 6am yesterday a convicted drug trafficker was hanged in Changi Prison. It doesn't matter what country he was from, but it matters where he was caught. A man was caught trafficking drugs in Singapore, and by Singaporean law he must die. End of story.

Don't think you can walk all over us just because you think we're a small little dot at your mercy and are unworthy of your respect. Don't assume we must act just like you because we're supposed "First World", like you are, and therefore share the same values -- and if we don't, hope to cow us into doing so with economic threats. You want to complain about the death penalty? For me, the ends justify the means. Our streets are clean, drug-free, and I can come home at midnight after walking through a deserted stretch of road and my parents won't stay up late, afraid for my safety. I have no need to fear. And what about you? That was a shitload of drugs he was about to push onto your streets, you know. Added on to what is already there. You say the death penalty doesn't work? The evidence is right before your eyes. Don't be blind.

You have lashed out at us, unfailingly. Singapore is Barbaric. Acting like a Third-World country (and what on earth is THAT insinuating??). Unmerciful. Cold. So...so ASIAN (and tsk tsk, we expected you to be better than the rest of them, Singapore.). And though we have the law on our side we do not say a harsh word in return -- we cannot. So you keep dishing it out, grinning in admiration at your own fervour, your own linguistic genius. Come on, tell us one we haven't heard before.

But it doesn't mean that it doesn't hurt to hear you call us these things.

Now, it's over. Grow up Australia. Move on. Accept that not every country in the world runs like yours does, and that they have dignity and sovreignty. Even if they're "Third World", as one of your people so pithily states.

And if you've got drugs, just stay the hell away from my country, because you know now what's coming if you're caught.

Disclaimer. As these things always go, this is purely addressed to the very vocal minority who would wish to lionize a drug pusher at the expense of disparaging and disrespecting the laws of another nation -- a drug pusher vs the law. Come on. Misguided and misplaced sympathies astound.

Head in the clouds
Vivienne Wong was hatched on the 12th of June 1985 and hails from Singapore, which contrary to popular belief, is not a colony of Japan. Formerly of Raffles Girls' Primary and Secondary School and then of Hwa Chong Junior College's Humanities Scheme, she is currently readjusting herself to the finer points of academia (read: she hasn't studied in ages and is really overworked) in her 2nd year at Nanyang Technological University Communication Studies. However she is currently spending the semester on the snowy plains of Ithaca College, New York, and lovin' it. Otherwise, she likes talking about herself in the third person, drawing, acting, comics, watching cartoons, eating Italian food, light rock, Irish music, Broadway tunes, acoustic guitar riffs, drawing some more and singing loudly in the bathroom. On the other hand, she dislikes unmotivated people, afternoon naps, the conventional, and people who are either smelly or wearing clothes too tight for them so that they end up bulging. Contactable here.
